How handicaps are worked out
You don’t work anything out. From each player’s tee, the app applies the 2024 World Handicap System and the right allowance for the format you’re playing, and rounds once at the end.
FreeDone to the WHS, automatically
You don’t have to touch a handicap formula. From each player’s tee, the app works out their course handicap (see the glossary), then applies the right allowance for the format to give their playing handicap (see the glossary), rounding once at the very end and never partway through. That is the 2024 World Handicap System done properly - the same sums a fussy committee member would check by hand, without you doing them.
Every format, the right allowance
It covers seventeen formats: the individual ones (Stroke Play, Stableford, Par/Bogey, Match Play, Skins), the pairs formats (Fourball Better Ball, Foursomes and Greensomes, each with a match-play version of its own, plus Chapman), and the team formats (Texas Scramble, Bowmaker, AM-AM, Alliance). Each carries its own correct allowance - Foursomes off 50% of the combined handicap, Greensomes at 60 and 40, a scramble down the order at 25, 20, 15 and 10. Plus handicaps are handled throughout, and if your society plays a format its own way, you can override the allowance for a trip or a single round.
Where the numbers come from
You give the app each player’s handicap index and the tee they are playing. Each tee carries its own slope, course rating and par, so the same index produces a different number of strokes off the white tees than off the red. That is what the badge next to a player’s name is showing you: the strokes they get on this course, off this tee, in this format - not the index they arrived with.
